Acts of Kindness Amplified This #GivingTuesday

Brad Ward

Hundreds of stories are amplified by the minute during #GivingTuesday. The global and social movement captures the hearts, minds, and spirits of many who look to philanthropy on this day.

On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday puts the focus back on the giving season by harnessing the potential of social media to bring about positive change in communities and inspire more acts of kindness.

High-level strategies for improvement are essential in philanthropy, but #GivingTuesday is refreshingly simple. It’s intuitive – a direct application of human empathy.

Foundations are effectively using #GivingTuesday as a vehicle to help residents volunteer and learn about local nonprofits. The Community Foundation, serving Richmond and Central Virginia, proudly promoted #GivingTuesday in conjunction with its resources to find local nonprofits and volunteer opportunities.

Golden Belt Community Foundation joined the movement two years ago and promotes #GivingTuesday as an opportunity to help build the endowment funds for nearly 60 charitable organizations in Kansas — raising an additional $210,000 last year. Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina shared the #GivingTuesday resources and amplified local nonprofits’ abilities to capitalize on the occasion.

Regardless of the approach a foundation takes to join this growing movement — which ushers people back into the giving season after Black Friday and Cyber Monday — #GivingTuesday provides a platform to encourage the donation of time, resources, and talents to address local challenges. It brings together the collective power of nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, families, and individuals to spark small acts of kindness.

Whatever your #GivingTuesday story is, please continue to amplify your voice and the voices of those around you in building broad support for American philanthropy. Together, we will continue to demonstrate the important role philanthropy plays in communities across the United States.
