Critical Impact Award

California Community Foundation fund and its Texas Partner Foundations—The Dallas Foundation, Permian Basin Area Foundation, and San Antonio Area Foundation—are co-recipients

The Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund (IADIF), a donor advised fund of the California Community Foundation, and its partners in the collaboration—The Dallas Foundation, Permian Basin Area Foundation, and San Antonio Area Foundation—are co-recipients of the Council on Foundations 2010 Critical Impact Award for community foundations.

When IADIF sought to address the impact of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on our military personnel and families, the philanthropic strategy called for both on-the-ground intelligence and grantmaking expertise in places hit hardest by the conflicts.

Community foundations were the perfect partners. They provided counseling, child care, transportation, emergency financial assistance, and support and recovery programs for the families of those killed in action; physical and mental health care; and much more.

In Texas, IADIF invested $30 million in The Dallas Foundation, Permian Basin Area Foundation, and San Antonio Area Foundation. These three foundations together established the TRIAD Fund, a groundbreaking collaborative that empowers local nonprofits to serve troops, veterans, and their families swiftly and in accordance with best practices.

TRIAD’s success has inspired IADIF to replicate the model with three community foundations in Florida.

Nancy Berglass, director of IADIF, will accept the award on behalf of the fund and the partner foundations at the Fall Conference for Community Foundations CFLT breakfast plenary, which runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14.
