Opening Plenary: How Do You Take Care of Your People?
Years of crisis, global disruption, and new opportunities have brought renewed attention to how organizations can better support our team members, and the call to help our colleagues work more effectively, sustainably, and humanely has placed new urgency on ensuring organizational cultures align with organizational values.
In this opening session, "people and culture" and HR professionals from a range of grantmakers will engage participants in frank discussions of practices and policies adopted during these times of change and crisis. How are we taking care of our people during the pandemic? What experiments do we want to make permanent, and how does all this “internal” work relate to our foundations’ missions? While HR staff and those with organizational culture responsibilities hold much of this work, we all have something to contribute.

How to Keep Up with A Changing Workforce
The workforce is shifting quickly. And while philanthropy has yet to feel the impact of the "great resignation" to the same extent as other sectors, there is still a need to explore new processes amid the changes brought about by COVID-19. Many organizations are implementing a hybrid work model, but how can we make that work equitably? From implementing new technologies and rethinking office space structures to designing entirely new policies, the current climate presents an opportunity – even a necessity – for philanthropy HR leaders to consider.
In this session, attendees will:
- Interrogate compliance as a primary approach
- Explore the evolution of worker expectations
- Begin disrupting the gendered nature of HR's emotional labor and responsibilities
Speakers:
- Trina Olson, Team Dynamics
- Alfonso Wenker, Team Dynamics
- Rhonda Cox, Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation
Disability in the Workplace: Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act — landmark civil rights legislation that includes protections to ensure people with disabilities have equal employment opportunities. Despite these protections, however, employment inequities abound for the disability community – data show that, in 2021, only 19.1% of people with disabilities were employed compared to 63.7% of people without.
This session is intended to engage attendees in real conversations about disability inclusion and equity in the workplace, discussing DEI staff and/or employee resource groups; instituting disability education in DEI training; recruiting, retaining, and promoting people with disabilities; how funders can create collaborative spaces and partnerships with disability communities, and more.
In this session, attendees will explore:
- How to include clear accessibility language in job postings
- What actions are needed to provide reasonable accommodations when requested

- Gail Fuller, Disability & Philanthropy Forum
- Stephanie Andrews, Bush Foundation
- Gao Lee, Bush Foundation
