Three Things to Know About Council Members

Council members represent all 50 states plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands, and 7 additional countries. Of the 1,006 current members, 44% are community foundations and 32% are private foundations.

Have you ever wondered about the organizations that make up Council membership? The philanthropic sector is broad and diverse, and the Council on Foundations is proud to support members from every corner.

More than 1,000 organizations make up Council membership. Council members:

  • Represent all 50 states, as well as D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and operate out of seven countries across the globe.
  • Are active in Council programs, and in 2025 they joined us for 60 member policy briefings, learned from one another during 175 peer calls, and 971 of them came together in person at our Leading Locally conference.
  • Engage with each other and support the sector, with almost 13,000 unique users leveraging peer knowledge through our Philanthropy Exchange, sharing knowledge with more than 28,000 interactions across more than 1,700 discussion threads, and participating in crucial Council canvasses like the Grantmaker Salary and Benefits Survey and the CCSF.
