With the war in Ukraine far from over, the immediate wave of support from philanthropy has dwindled. However, the war continues to have devastating impacts on Ukraine, Ukrainians globally, global food insecurity, and the global economy.

In partnership with the Community Foundations of Canada, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, this a funder-only roundtable series started in October. This roundtable series featured guest speakers with deep expertise on the war and its ramifications while allowing foundations to discuss these issues in a private environment. There was the opportunity to co-create the series through a brief survey at the end of the inaugural session by sharing your thoughts on what we can do for you around your efforts related to Ukraine.

This first session focused on the current, near-term, and longer-term needs and philanthropy's role in supporting Ukraine and Ukraianians.

  • H.E. Oksana Markarova, Ambassador of Ukraine to the U.S., encouraged philanthropic engagement for both humanitarian aid and long-term recovery.
  • Roman Waschuk emphasized Ukraine's strong private and civil society sectors and philanthropy's role in bridging gaps in emergency relief and development.

  • Martina Hrvolova, Resident Fellow and Senior Advisor to the Transatlantic Democracy Working Group, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)

  • Nick Deychakiwsky, Senior Program Officer, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
  • Jonathan Katz, Democracy Initiatives Director, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF)
  • Oksana Markarova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States
  • Roman Waschuk,  Business Ombudsman and Former Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine
