Community Foundation Update - September 2017

Brad Ward

It has been an eventful month with back to back hurricanes causing extensive damage in Florida,Texas, and the Caribbean. The Council has been in contact with community foundations in the affected areas to offer our thoughts and has set up some valuable resources which I am sharing in this issue. Also, this month you will find an array of exciting updates for this fall and a look ahead to what is in store in 2018 to help you plan learning opportunities, networking events, and gain new experiences to enrich the community foundation field. In addition, please find below quick tips and links associated with National Standards for the most commonly asked questions.

The Council provides these messages to the entire community foundation field on a quarterly basis to keep you informed and engaged as best as possible. Of course, we always invite you to consider membership with the Council and our team would be delighted to discuss this with you. Simply email or call me at 703-879-0650.

Hurricane Irma Resources

Hurricane Irma was the second major storm in the last two weeks. As residents in the Caribbean and Florida set about rebuilding their lives, the Council is partnering with the Center for Disaster Philanthropy to offer some guidance for funders wanting to help. The Council and CDP will co-host a webinar on Thursday, September 14 at 3 p.m. EST. The Council has also set up a Hurricane Irma Resources Page as well as a resources page dedicated to Hurricane Harvey which devastated Texas recently.

National Center for Family Philanthropy Readiness Self-Assessment

This summer, NCFP launched a free, new tool for all community foundations, regardless of their affiliation with NCFP. The Family Philanthropy Readiness Self-Assessment helps community foundations assess their current level of readiness to undertake or expand services to multi-branch and/or multi-generational families.

Can scholarship funds make a difference? – Webinar (Sept 27)

As the former CEO of a community foundation, I had a love-hate relationship with scholarships. While often attractive to donors, I found them incomprehensibly limited in their ability to drive impact and a burden, administratively.

Since meeting our partners, National College Access Network (NCAN) and the stories of a few innovative community foundations, I might be convinced otherwise. Join me to learn more about streamlining scholarship practices, the legal ins and outs, and strategies for deepened impact and donor interest.
