After the outbreak of COVID-19, philanthropic organizations across the world committed to increased flexibility and trust with nonprofit partners. With new data showing only a 1 percentage point increase in US foundation grants going directly to organizations in other countries since 2011, this is a key moment to commit to greater localization in global giving.
Localization is not a new topic. In 2016, the Grand Bargain established a 25% target for aid organizations to shift resources to local organizations by 2020. And while bilateral funders have been slow to meet this target, more have recommitted to reaching 25% direct funding by 2030 in recent years. For philanthropy to continue its commitment to adopt better ways of operating, acting on the localization agenda will be paramount in the years to come.
Alongside UNGA, the Council on Foundations, WINGS, and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation presented new data on the state of giving to global causes and partners and discuss practical strategies for scaling up philanthropy’s commitment to localization in global grantmaking.
