This retreat is an opportunity to step away from the challenges of your day-to-day and find renewed energy and motivation in fellowship with other new CEOs. This event is the Council's annual retreat for early-tenure community foundation chief executives. Hosted by Fred Blackwell and the San Francisco Foundation, it will take place in-person from noon on October 16th until to 2pm on October 17, 2024.

The Community Foundation Executive Retreat is intended for executive leaders (CEOs, Presidents, Executive Directors) of community foundations who have been in their current executive role for four years or less. Executives newer to their current role with prior executive leadership experience as well as first-time CEOs are equally welcome to attend.

Over the two consecutive half-days sessions, attendees will delve into both the practical and existential issues facing Community Foundation Executives new to their role, such as navigating change and staff expectations, establishing innovative business models, and building institutions for the future. Through peer support and coaching we will also explore the collective wisdom of our fellow leaders, and equip you with an expanded network, fresh ideas, and new motivation.

Retreat objectives:

  • Raise and discuss key challenges for early-tenure foundation executives;
  • Provide peer coaching on top-of-mind leadership challenges;
  • Build peer relationships and exchange tips/resources.

Past participant testimonial:

“I wanted to write and let you know how important this experience was for me and to thank you. The dialogue, comradery, and peer coaching was so helpful and came at a time where I was really needing it. I returned home with more confidence and a greater sense of community, which I have been desperately missing in the last three and a half years.”
