Elizabeth Ruen is a mission-driven leader with over 20 years of experience advancing health equity and improving healthcare access in rural communities. With a strong foundation in public health policy, administration, and strategic philanthropy, she has dedicated her career to driving transformative change in the nonprofit, healthcare, and philanthropic sectors.

As a Program Officer for Rural Healthcare at The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, Elizabeth oversees a diverse portfolio of grants, managing over $100 million in active projects aimed at strengthening rural healthcare systems. Her leadership has been instrumental in expanding cancer care services, pioneering telehealth initiatives, and addressing workforce shortages through innovative education and training programs. She brings a visionary approach to strategic planning, stakeholder collaboration, and systems change—ensuring that underserved populations receive the care they need.

Prior to her role at Helmsley, Elizabeth worked at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System where she led marketing, communications, and community engagement efforts. She has also held leadership positions in grants management, event planning, and volunteer coordination, successfully securing millions in funding for community programs.

Elizabeth is currently completing a Doctorate in Public Health Policy at Nebraska Methodist College, further solidifying her expertise in evidence-based policymaking and program development. She also holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of Science in Administration both from the University of South Dakota, along with an Executive Certificate in Philanthropy from Georgetown University. Her published work and speaking engagements underscore her thought leadership in rural health innovation. She remains deeply committed to fostering sustainable, community-driven solutions that enhance healthcare access and outcomes in rural America.
