Council on Foundations Statement on Proposed IRS Regulations Affecting Private Schools

WASHINGTON — On September 3rd, the Department of the Treasury and the IRS released proposed regulations addressing racial nondiscrimination requirements for private schools. Kathleen Enright, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations, issued the following statement:

“Philanthropy’s core work is to support the issues, causes, and communities that otherwise would go without. If enacted, this proposed rule would even further curtail support for the very people and groups that have been habitually under-resourced. The Council on Foundations is watching closely and deeply invested in how this rule is finalized. We will continue to work on behalf of our members to ensure  that tax-exempt status does not depend on alignment with the policy preferences of those in office but with what is charitable.”
