Out in the Open
Executive Director
HB has spent the past 25 years organizing for justice & liberation in rural LGBTQ+ communities. Since 2014, they have served as the executive director of Out in the Open, a multiracial, mostly working class, movement building organization whose mission is to connect rural LGBTQ+ people to build community, visibility, knowledge, and power.
In addition to their work at OITO, they are a Better Selves Fellow and Advisory Board member as well as a Board Member of Vermont Public. They hold a certificate in nonprofit management from Marlboro College, and a BA with distinction in Environmental Politics from Whitman College. HB is the recipient of several awards including recognition in 2022 as one The Advocate magazine’s “50 Champions of Pride,” and the 2023 Con Hogan Award for Creative, Entrepreneurial, and Community Leadership. They are the originator/co-creator of many projects such as the Rural LGBTQ+ Audio Retreat, Out in the Open Summit, Andrews Inn Oral History Project, and the Power & Belonging Fellowship.
HB also loves laughing, playing cribbage, carving wooden spoons, solar eclipse totality, and finding blue sea glass. They live in Vermont with their partner.
