Civic Commons
Chief Architect
Michael Brown is a visionary civic leader dedicated to building stronger, more inclusive communities by centering community voice and strengthening civic muscle. As Chief Architect of Civic Commons, he leads a regional movement to ensure that diverse voices shape decisions advancing racial and economic equity. For more than two decades, Michael has forged cross-sector partnerships to dismantle systemic barriers and drive progress in affordable housing, economic justice, and policy reform. Previously, as Vice President of Community Programs at Seattle Foundation, he redefined philanthropic partnership with community and launched nationally recognized initiatives such as Communities of Opportunity and the Vibrant Democracy Initiative. In 2018, he founded Civic Commons to equip regions with the relationships, tools, and shared responsibility needed to solve complex challenges, advancing initiatives like the Black Home Initiative and Communities of Belonging. His leadership across policy, philanthropy, and civic innovation has earned national recognition, though he measures success by communities being heard, empowered, and able to shape their own futures.
