On April 25, 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Nepal, in an area between the capitol city of Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tremors and aftershocks were felt across the region in India, Bangladesh, Tibet and on Mount Everest. As the world has watched the devastation unfold, the question “what should I do?” has been repeated.

The Center for Disaster Philanthropy and the Council on Foundations hosted a webinar, “Nepal Earthquake: How Can Donors Help?” at 2 p.m. ET on May 1. The webinar provided a report on the situation as it stood one week after the earthquake and discussed philanthropic lessons learned from similar disasters and what donors should consider in order to best leverage their donations to the Nepal situation.

Moderated by Robert G. Ottenhoff, president and CEO of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, panelists included:

  • Joel, Charney, vice-president of humanitarian policy and practice, InterAction
  • Karen Keating Ansara, fund advisor, Ansara Family Fund at the Boston Foundation
  • Dr. George Varughese, Nepal Country Representative, The Asia Foundation

You can find a summary of this webinar and listen to a recording on the Center for Disaster Philanthropy's website.
