#PhilChat: International Corporate Philanthropy Day. How is the Sector Responding to Global Challenges?

Twitter debate to look at the role of giving in business

In celebration of International Corporate Philanthropy Day (ICPD), February's #PhilChat will convene some of the most prominent corporate giving programs to explore the role businesses are playing in communities around the world through philanthropic efforts. ICPD, which falls on the fourth Monday of every February, recognizes the advocacy taking place through corporate-community partnerships and encourages more businesses to increase giving initiatives. This month’s #PhilChat will shine the spotlight on the work currently taking place, the challenges involved, and how to engage more corporate giving on a global scale.

Please join the Council on Foundations and The Chronicle of Philanthropy during a special Twitter Chat, February 27, 2–3 p.m. ET, using the hashtag #PhilChat.

Participants are invited to share their experiences and ideas related to international corporate philanthropy and to join representatives from some of the top corporate giving programs, the Council’s corporate and global philanthropy teams, and other philanthropic leaders to discuss how the corporate sector is responding to societal challenges around the globe. The issues to be discussed include:

  1. Is the business community truly engaged in the global philanthropic sector?
  2. How can corporations weave philanthropy into the fabric of their model?
  3. What happens when a business model contradicts a corporate giving program’s mission?
  4. How can companies better engage employees in their giving or foundation’s activities?
  5. What is the value of community or local partnerships?
  6. How has global grantmaking impacted local communities?

How the Twitter Chat Works: Participants just need to access their Twitter account and follow the discussion through the #PhilChat hashtag.

The Chronicle and the Council will encourage participants to tweet questions before and during the one-hour online conversation. Some of the most common questions and requests for information will be gathered and addressed during the chat.

Participants can send messages via Twitter before the chat to the Council (@COF_) or the Chronicle (@philanthropy).
