Philanthropy's New Voice Report Appendices

“Philanthropy’s New Voice: Building Trust With Deeper Stories and Clear Language,” offers science-backed strategies for foundations to build understanding and trust, starting with the words they use and the stories they tell. It is the result of a yearlong research collaboration between the Council on Foundations and the Center for Public Interest Communications.

To see what we learned from each aspect of the research— including findings, descriptions, interview protocols, and survey instruments for each of the methods—visit the appendices below:

  • Appendix A: A landscape scan that compiles our insights from an initial scan of news accounts, internal messaging documents from a handful of foundations, and available public polls that helped us understand how the American public sees philanthropy.
  • Appendix B: The results from a sector survey we conducted of communications practitioners working for nonprofits and foundations.
  • Appendix C: An analysis of Congressional Research Service reports that discuss foundations and how they operate.
  • Appendix D: A social media listening report analyzing the public posts of members of Congress that mention foundations or philanthropy.
  • Appendix E: An analysis of the interviews with practitioners who work in philanthropic communications.
  • Appendix F: An analysis of the interviews with legislative staff to members of Congress.
  • Appendix G: An analysis of the results of a national survey of 3,557 Americans. The data from the survey is available on the Center for Public Interest Communications’ website
