Hosted by Mark Sidel, J.D. Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Visiting Chair in Community Foundations at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the Council on Foundations, this session was an immersive group discussion. Community foundation leaders, local philanthropic leaders, and IUPUI faculty, staff, and students came together to hear reactions, fresh perspectives, and thought-leadership following an opinion piece on more disruptions for the community foundation business model recently published by the Council.
Centered on an opinion piece written by Kevin Murphy, President, Berks County Community Foundation during his 2016 tenure as Foundation Leader in Residence at the Council on Foundations, this interactive group discussion focused on the rationale of asset growth, disruptions to the community foundation business model, and how changes in the local financial services field may force some fundamental changes on community foundations.
Moderated by Mark Sidel, this session provided outside perpsectives and an immersive group dialogue, with panelists including the author, Kevin Murphy, and Brad Ward, Director of Community Philanthropy at the Council on Foundations. Additional philanthropic leaders on the panel included Jennifer Bartenbach, Chief Financial Officer at Central Indiana Community Foundation, and Linda Yoder, Executive Director of Marshall County Community Foundation.
This session identified the changes community foundations are facing and explored ways to navigate disruption. The panel and attendees considered questions such as whether or not asset growth is an imperative for community foundations and what role do donor advised funds play in community foundation growth and sustainability. A new narrative is possible around growth and remaining influential in community philanthropy, and this session unpack many possibilities.
