The Charitable Sector Urgently Needs Your Voice
The charitable sector urgently needs your voice. On Tuesday, May 13, Congress will begin considering a tax package that will likely include a substantial increase to the excise tax on net investment income for private foundations. For the largest private foundations, it may expand to as much as 10 percent. Make no mistake: While this provision targets private foundations, it threatens the charitable resources available to the nonprofit sector as a whole.
Amid drastic cuts in federal funding, the last thing Congress should do is take more dollars away from nonprofits and communities. These resources need to be available to ensure young moms have the support they need to thrive, support people through economic uncertainty, and rebuild our towns in the aftermath of disaster. We need your voice now to keep charitable dollars where they can do the most good.
Use our action alert and phone script to tell your members of Congress to oppose this provision. Lobbying against an increase to the private foundation excise tax falls within the self-defense exception for private foundations, though be sure to follow your organization’s policies when it comes to lobbying.
Meanwhile, the Council is collecting stories of impact to share with members of Congress. Let us know: how would an increase in the excise tax hurt your grantmaking?
Thank you for standing up and lifting your voice. Together we can protect our sector and ensure charitable resources are available for generations to come.
