Assets, gifts, and grants
The collective asset total among all reporting community foundations is 10 percent lower than the collective total for 2021. During a year in which the broader economy was experiencing a significant decline which impacted invested assets, 84 percent of all participating community foundations reported a negative year over year change in their asset totals, while 50 percent reported a decrease in fundraising totals from 2021. Given overall market declines throughout 2022, the median decrease for community foundations operating on a calendar year and those with a June 30 fiscal year end was the same: 13 percent. Only those with a March 31 fiscal year end date (n=9) reported a median increase, of 14 percent.

Nearly half of all respondents experienced a moderate or dramatic decrease in fundraising (defined as a decrease of 10 or more percent) from 2021 levels, and the median community foundation experienced a one percent year over year reduction in fundraising. Interestingly, year over year changes in fundraising varied by asset size cohort: the median foundations in the under $25M, $100-250M, and $500M+ asset size cohorts experienced reductions in gifts received, while the remaining cohorts ($25-$100M and $250-$500M) saw year over year, double-digit increases in gifts.
Community foundations across the field increased their grantmaking to new highs, continuing a trend from the previous two years. The median participating community foundation increased their grantmaking total by seven percent over 2021, with all size cohorts reporting increases.
