Social Media Guy: Gone But Not Forgotten
It was suggested in a half-joking manner that I should write a blog on my last day at the Council. At first I dismissed it, thinking it would be cheesy. I could write about the great colleagues I worked with, the knowledge of philanthropy I gained, or the numerous relationships I developed in the field. But then I realized maybe there is some value in asking the question: What happens when your foundation’s social media guy leaves?
It is only natural for an organization’s social media efforts to take on the unique voice of the person posting them. So when that person leaves, the voice will change to reflect the writing style and personality of his (or her) replacement. I know I’m leaving the Council’s social media presence in trusted hands, and no doubt my witty, dry sense of humor will be carried on (or at least I like to think so) for better or worse. I encourage others to embrace having a different voice and to encourage my replacement to be her own person, creative and uninhibited in her posts.
The other main thing to consider is that there is always a transition period. Not only am I dumping all of my social media responsibilities on another person, but she also will be handling many of my other responsibilities as well as her own projects, at least until a new person is hired. The person handling the social media in the interim is only human, and while managing several tasks at once there probably will be some drop off. But I know she’ll work hard and keep the Council’s social media presence active. Please make her feel welcome!
It has been a pleasure working with all of you for the last 14 months. I hope that everyone has enjoyed and learned from the Re: Philanthropy blog as much as I have.
