Shared knowledge for community foundations

Assets, gifts, and grants

Nearly 90 percent of the community foundations included in this year’s sample ended 2023 with a year over year increase in assets over 2022 totals, largely due to positive investment returns across the field in an economic climate seeing some recovery following the worst of the pandemic. However, over half of the community foundations in the sample experienced declines in fundraising in 2023, reflecting broad declines in individual charitable giving across the philanthropic sector (Source: Giving USA). By contrast, grantmaking continued to increase across the field, with roughly two-thirds of all community foundations in the sample distributing more funds compared to the previous year (n=228).

2023 marks the first year in which total reported grantmaking outpaced fundraising (n=615) since CF Insights began releasing this snapshot.

Changes in gift and grant activity

Just over half of the community foundations in the sample experienced year over year declines in fundraising, with the median community foundation seeing a 3% decrease. Change rates varied by asset size cohort: the median community foundation with less than $25M in assets saw a 10% year over year increase in fundraising, while the median community foundation with more than $500M in assets saw a 6% decrease.

Grantmaking totals continued to grow across all asset size cohorts for the third straight year, with the median community foundation increasing their giving by 10%. (n=228)
